Newly Qualified Surveyors Face Ethical Challenges: An International Perspective

The 433 recently certified surveyors have been encouraged to uphold ethical standards, maintain proper conduct, and pursue ongoing education in their professional endeavors.

The guidance was provided at the induction ceremony organized in Abuja by the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON).

The theme for this event was "Beyond the Seal: Enhancing Your Brand, Voice, and Worth as a Professional." The Chairman, serving dual roles as the Surveyor-General of the Federation (SGOF) and named Abduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, addressed the newly inducted members, emphasizing how their skills would be crucial in molding Nigeria’s future.

He stated, "This marks a fresh start towards a hopeful future where your skills will play a crucial role in nation-building. Surveyors like you serve as key experts and provide essential frameworks relied upon not only nationally but globally—including Nigeria—for constructing robust societies."

He mentioned that their induction reflected not only the effort they had invested but also their commitment.

SGOF guaranteed the newly appointed surveyors that their growth would be supported via continuous educational programs and joint research initiatives that foster the sharing of information and superior methodologies.

"I commend all of you for embracing the ethical principles that form the foundation of our profession. May accuracy and precision lead your way, and may the quest for excellence characterize everything you do," he stated.

Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, commended the council for their steadfast dedication to maintaining high levels of excellence, professionalism, and ethical conduct within the field of surveying. He emphasized that surveying plays an essential role in both the economic finances and infrastructure growth of the country.

For those who have just joined us, he stated, "Today’s induction adds more members to the survey team in our beloved country. This is indeed positive progress, particularly because as surveyors, you play crucial roles in infrastructure development—a key aspect of President's Renewed Hope Initiative.

To all newly initiated members, you are entering a realm where advanced technologies, geospatial data, and innovative practices are transforming every field we work in. Do not rely solely on past academic achievements; instead, commit to ongoing education, follow ethical guidelines strictly, and uphold professional conduct at all times. Most importantly, serve as an exemplary representative of your profession regardless of where life takes you. The progress of land management, city planning, and growth heavily depends on each one of you.

The former Minister of Environment and ex-Registrar of SURCON, Suleiman Hassan-Zarma, encouraged those entering the field to expand the boundaries of their profession and overcome any obstacles that might impede progress regardless of where they are situated.

He encouraged them to consider ways they could enhance the value of services offered in sectors such as agriculture, housing, healthcare, and urban development among others.

Matthew Ibitoye, President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, stated that the induction ceremony represented a crucial step in the professional path of those being initiated.

"It represents an eternal dedication to the field of surveying. Success in the exam isn’t just due to effort; it’s the result of perseverance, concentration, and toughness. As you embark on this significant journey toward professional acknowledgment, I encourage you to keep in mind that your influence should contribute positively to the growth of the geospatial sector both within Nigeria and around the world," he stated.
