One Suspect Arrested as Rival Cult Groups Clash Over Supremacy at Rivers Varsity
PORT HARCOURT – A suspect has been apprehended by the Anti-Cultism unit of the Rivers State Police Command after a confrontation.
Between alleged Viking members and Black Axe sect factions at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education’s principal campus in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The conflict arising from the power struggle between competing sects caused immense fear among both students and faculty members, as chaos erupted across the campus following several gunshots.
It emerged that certain members of the Black Axe gang infiltrated the university looking for Viking members to retaliate against after one of their individuals had been attacked previously.
During the resulting commotion, one of the alleged members of the cult was apprehended by the security team, which led to the discovery of a Beretta handgun.
The arrested individual was first held at the Rumulomeni Police Division near Iwofe on the campus grounds before being moved to the headquarters of the Anti-Cultism Unit within the Rivers Police Command.
Upon being reached out to, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, verified the occurrence, stating that the matter was under control and both academic and non-academic operations had restarted.
She stated, "Indeed, I can verify the incident occurred. The police have apprehended one suspect; investigations are still underway, and appropriate security precautions have been implemented to ensure the preservation of law and order."
