Ogun Pledges Commitment to Advancing Circular Economy
The government of Ogun State has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining its status as the hub for the circular economy within Nigeria and across Sub-Saharan Africa by formulating policies and enacting supportive legislation.
Dr. Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, provided this guarantee upon receiving representatives from the Circular Business Platform based in the Netherlands. These delegates were in Abeokuta as part of aCircular Economy Scoping Mission titled ' Unlocking a Sustainable Future.' This meeting took place recently.
As per his statement, Ogun State isn’t merely discussing circles; embracing the concept of a circular economy presents significant opportunities and sustenance for countless people. Therefore, the state continues to serve as the epicenter of this economic model within both Nigeria and the broader Sub-Saharan African region.
He acknowledged that the state government had established both policies and legislation, emphasizing that the state excelled in addressing every aspect related to environmental concerns as well as social and economic frameworks. He further mentioned that with clear intentions, each project undertaken by the state government tackled issues of sustainability and regeneration.
Oresanya, acknowledging the collaboration with the Platform, stated, "After hearing presentations from all parties about the potential benefits and the significant progress made towards circular economy within the state, it is evident to those associated with the Platform that this approach has become well-established here, showcasing interconnectedness and mutual dependence."
“Furthermore, the state government plans to initiate comprehensive training programs shortly for numerous young individuals under the 'Ignite Ogun' initiative focused on the concept of circular economy. This effort aims to enhance their understanding of the advantages associated with this economic approach, thereby reinforcing the region’s status as the leading hub for circular economy within both Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.”
During their fact-finding trip to the region, Peter Keulers, who leads the Circular Business Platform and also serves as the Deputy Consular General of the Netherlands for Nigeria, stated that this collaboration aims to broaden understanding among all parties involved via training sessions, workshops, and exchange programs focused on the principles of a circular economy. Additionally, this initiative seeks to generate new employment opportunities within the field.
Later, the team went to the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, where the ex-president affirmed their dedication along with the state government to collaborate with the platform. This partnership aims to broaden the reach and enhance the achievements of the circular economy within the Gateway State.
