Court Blocks Abia's Bid to Appoint New Judges
A Federal High Court in Umuahia has ordered the Abia State Government and its officials not to commence any fresh procedures for appointing judges within the state.
Following challenges from two candidates against the state government’s efforts to reinstate the selection process for appointing ten new judges, this decision was made.
In 2022, the Abia State Judicial Service Commission narrowed down the list of potential candidates for judicial positions.
On October 17, 2022, these candidates took part in an interview organized by the National Judicial Council. In addition, they underwent scrutiny from the Department of State Security (DSS). When a legal challenge was initiated to stop the proceedings, they were still waiting for their official appointments.
The state government discontinued the 2022 selection process and initiated a fresh one, leading to disappointment amongst those who had been shortlisted in 2022.

Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne and Victoria Okey Nwokeukwu, acting on behalf of themselves and all other 2022 candidates, brought legal action against the Abia State Judicial Service Commission, the state’s Chief Judge, the Attorney General, along with eight additional individuals.
The plaintiffs sought a temporary order to preserve the current state of affairs until the court rules on the request for a preliminary injunction. Additionally, they asked the judiciary to grant any extra orders as it saw fit.
Upon examining the affidavit backing the petition, Judge S.B. Onu from the Federal High Court instructed all involved parties to maintain the status quo before the initiation of the recent appointment procedure until the court reaches its ultimate verdict on the matter. Additionally, the claimants had to pledge compensation should the court determine that issuing this directive was unwarranted.
