98 Arrested Following Botched Zimbabwe Protest Attempt
In total, 98 people who were involved in the unsuccessful protests on Monday faced the Magistrates Court yesterday. They are charged with taking part in a public assembly aimed at inciting violence.
The demonstrators allegedly shouted slogans, hurled rocks at law enforcement agents, and tried to block streets using bricks and tires.
The Harare Provincial Magistrate, Mr Isheunesu Matova, oversaw the hearings for 95 accused individuals, whereas three separate cases involving Moreblessing Nkomo, Jenifer Chimange, and Stabile Maduve were handled individually by Magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo.
The group of three was detained at Copacabana Bus Terminal, whereas the remaining 95 individuals were caught at Robert Mugabe Square.
Mr Anesu Chirenje, the prosecutor, informed the court that the individuals assembled at Robert Mugabe Square at approximately 9:20 am on March 31 with the intention of instigating chaos as part of an overarching scheme.
It is said that some people made recordings of the protest through videos and photos, which they subsequently posted on social media with the intent of fueling more disorder.
Of the 98 suspects, 94 were arrested at the scene, while another was apprehended at his residence after being identified in online footage.
Submitted statements from both the prosecution and defense are anticipated to begin being presented on Tuesday, with the decision regarding bail set for April 10th.
In the meantime, Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere stated that the unsuccessful protests indicated overwhelming backing from Zimbabweans for President Mnangagwa and the ZANU PF government.
At a post-Cabinet briefing, Dr. Muswere denounced the organizers as "misguided cyber terrorists" and reiterated the country's dedication to maintaining peace and stability.
He stressed that Zimbabweans have a shared duty to attain Vision 2030, with the goal of becoming an upper-middle-income nation by the year 2030.
